10 Things I'm Doing To Kickstart My 20's | GROWING UP GIRLBOSS
I turned twenty 3 weeks ago.. TWENTY! Cue the weird feeling of not having “teen” on my age anymore. Ive seen a lot of posts about being in your 20s. I know this one’s going to be a wild ride, and Iii REALLY wanna do this thing right. Haha! But does anyone ever know how to? And is there actually a right way?
On my last few birthdays, I would feel odd about being another year older but right now, I’m happy because twenty feels right. Maybe it is because, by grace, I have learned to stop comparing my journey to those of others. I dont believe in any timeline pressure anymore and just look ahead my own path. #stayinyaownlane.
I do, however, acknowledge that being in my twenties comes with a much bigger responsibility not only for myself, but as well as for those I care about, for the people I’ve yet to meet, and ultimately, the world.
I love this game of life and girl, no matter what, you bet I’m gonna make this chapter a fun ride. Here are the things I’m doing to kickstart my twenties!
For my twentieth birthday, I went to Toronto! I got to invest in my personal development by going to Tony Robbins, meet people I admire, check out cute coffee shops in new places, and see family! (I’m kind of proud of myself because Ed and Bruno went on tour there on the same month and yet I chose Tony. Haha! I’m a big girl now!)
It was my first time air traveling solo and I literally cried for two days straight because of petty reasons. Oops. I allowed the whole process to give me anxiety more than it shouldve but as always, my mom comes to the rescue! (Big girl now, hey? Hahaha!) And I did go. IM GLAD I DID.
I always go to places on my own but Toronto felt different and it’s not just because I had to get to it by plane. The experiences I had, the places I got to see and the people Ive met, oh gosh the people, have given me another perspective and made me cling tighter to my goals. BEST BDAY EVER.
2. GET MY MONEY RIGHT
I have to remind myself that getting my money right doesnt only mean saying “I love money and money loves me” every morning. Haha! So I identified things Im no longer going to buy, put money on my savings and always give my tithes. Also, I have this utterly EXTRA google sheets for literally every money that comes in and comes out. Down to bus money! I just need to catch up on it haha. I wanna know my money like the back of my hand.. (I dont actually know the back of my hand that much but you get the point.)
And oh, first birthday wherein I get to celebrate with my own money!! Cue Beyonce’s Run The World plz. Haha!
“Give yourself more chances by taking on more chances.” My favorite tweet ever from Gary Vee’s filmmaker, DRock.
I’m going to keep putting myself out there, get involved in more things, create more and share more. Lets fill our calendars with things that light up our souls, shall we?
As of right now, I have three volunteer projects and I’m going to an interview for one next week! At first reaching out to people was scary but really, when you show up with an attitude of giving, it is so much easier and people are more than happy to welcome you instead of when you approach with what you want from them. Gotta give!
4. CLEAN UP PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL SPACE.
They say success leaves clues.. and if you wanna follow someone’s footsteps, look at their habits. The day I got home from Toronto, I looked through my pictures of Rachelle and thought, if I’m saying she’s the future version of myself that I envision, why am I not doing as she does?
So I listened to our interview again and followed her tips—basically clearing my phone of clutter. I installed the Wunderlist app, color-coded my calendar and hey, I even changed up my wallpapers it has been a breathe of fresh air!!
Then recently, I did a general clean up of my room as well. Still have yet to change my sheets and maybe the curtains but IM A RENEWED PERSON. Just saying. Cleaner room, who dis?
5. PROTECT MY YES.
Another one from my interview with Rachelle. I had a lightbulb moment when she said, “If it’s not a ‘HELL YES!’, it is a No.” That’s how Ive made decisions ever since. Like her, I’m such a ‘yes!’ person not only because I feel bad saying no to people (givers gotta give, you know?) but also because of my fear of missing out. Haha! Like, what if this changes my life for the better and Im gonna miss it because I said no? That Butterfly Effect movie really got to me.
I have to let go of that mindset if I want to keep my sanity and be able to be present wholly for the things I say “Yes” to. I can’t just say “yes” and then figure out how Im gonna do it minutes before it’s here. Being able to say no will determine the quality of my “Yes.” and this way, I’ll make sure I respect other people’s time and energy, as well as my own.
6. SET ASIDE AN HOUR FOR LEARNING EVERY DAY
Now whether that’s reading a book with my phone away on the other room, watching skillshare videos about marketing, listening to a podcast while I do the dishes or going for a run, it MUST happen. If I can scroll mindlessly for an hour, I sure can invest in myself for an hour. Haha! And hey, let’s acknowledge the compound effect. By the end of the year, you would have 365 hours of personal development! That’s why Im making it a non-negotiable.
7. INVEST MY TIME, MONEY AND ENERGY IN WHAT HELPS ME GROW
...and make me happy.
The way we spend our resources on should be aligned with our values. And growth is one of the biggest things for me. Growth makes me happy. Booking plane tickets to Toronto and going to Tony’s event was a major decision but when I realised just how much value I will get from it, it was a no-brainer. I stopped asking “what will this cost me?” but instead I asked “What value will I get from it?” or you know.. “What’s the ROI?” Haha! #womeninbiz. Like Tony said, “Questions are the answer.” So we just have to ask ourselves the right questions! Im so glad I get to be part of YEGBOSSBABES’ birthday brunch as well as the recent Helcim event. I’m going to surround myself with more of these.
8. TAKE BETTER CARE OF MY BODY.
And yup, this includes flossing twice a day. #noshame.
I dont have a problem with my body and I LOVE IT and what it does for me. However, I also can’t deny that Ive gain so much weight since getting here.
I have to cut back from Hot Chocolate! Haha! I’ll start at home and change it up to tea or just water. Sometimes I fool myself by saying “Oh I work out, that’s okay..” Haha! But you see, it is 80% what put into my body.. Nicole, you can’t work out in the morning and eat just about anything for the rest of the day.
And yup, moisturiser and lip balm. And water. Lots of it.
9. DRESS THE PART
We show up better when we feel comfortable and confident with what we are wearing. I really REALLY enjoy being in a fancy business blazer. I promise I feel like another woman even when Im just going to the library to work. Haha! Giving myself a taste of that 9-5 life. And Id wear heels everytime I get a chance. Also, I could be overly excited sometimes when Im at events and meeting new people and it shows up in my actions! Maybe wearing profesh and grown-up business clothes would compensate for my (sometimes) childish disposition. We’ll see.
10. MY WEBSITE
I recently pulled an all nighter redesigning my website and I feel more inspired to put content in it more than ever. Especially because Ive made the design more focused on content instead of the web copy. I told myself that I want my website to be a magazine of how I experience life and I intend to make it so.
Ive also updated my content calendar and am figuring out ways on how I can stay committed and at the same time, create things I am actually proud. “This will do” won’t do anymore, you know? And if it has my name on it, I better be proud of it.
So there you have it! I’m loving twenty so far although I have yet to master not saying “nineteen” when people ask me about my age. Haha! How did it feel when you turned twenty?
Thanks for reading!
